Introduction
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend my first digital marketing interview at a reputed MNC. Interestingly, I did not apply for this role, the company approached me based on my profile.
As a fresher with no prior internship experience, this was a valuable and eye-opening experience that helped me understand real industry expectations.
Understanding Industry Expectations
During the interview, I realized that having knowledge of digital marketing concepts like SEO, Google Ads, and social media marketing is important, but not enough.
The interviewer focused more on:
- Practical application of skills
- Contribution to business goals
- Real-world marketing thinking
This made me understand that companies are looking for problem-solvers, not just learners.
The Importance of Practical Knowledge
One key takeaway from this experience was the importance of practical exposure.
Instead of just knowing:
- What SEO is
- What Google Ads is
Companies expect you to explain:
- How SEO can generate leads
- How ads target the right audience
- How campaigns can be optimized
Key Learnings from My Interview
1. Skills Are Not Enough (Projects Matter)
Listing skills is not enough. You must show real work and implementation.
2. Think Like a Marketer
Instead of theory, think:
“How will this help the business grow?”
3. Understand the Industry
Understanding target audience and industry (like banking, IT, etc.) is very important.
4. Communication Matters
Clear and confident communication plays a huge role in interviews.
What I Will Improve
After this experience, I will focus on:
- Building practical projects
- Improving real-world marketing understanding
- Creating a portfolio
- Strengthening communication skills
Conclusion
This interview was not just an opportunity — it was a learning experience that gave me clarity about industry expectations.
It helped me understand that to succeed in digital marketing, one must go beyond theory and focus on real-world application.
This is just the beginning of my journey, and I am committed to continuously improving myself.
